Why My Kid, My Choice

Why?

Because no one knows, loves, or is responsible for a child more than their parents. Yet across our nation—and especially here in New Mexico—government agencies, activist groups, and school systems are working to erode parental rights and insert themselves between parents and children. My Kid, My Choice stands to push back against that overreach by affirming a simple truth: families, not government, have the right and responsibility to shape a child’s health, education, and values. Protecting parental rights isn’t partisan—it’s common sense.

MKMC Key Objectives

Key Objectives

  • Protect Parental Rights
Uphold and defend the fundamental right of parents to make decisions regarding their children’s upbringing, education, and medical care.

  • Promote Transparency & Accountability
Advocate for open access to curriculum, policies, and materials in schools and public institutions so parents can make informed choices.

  • Empower Families with Resources
Provide parents with the tools, research, and legal understanding they need to confidently safeguard their children’s wellbeing and future.

  • Advance Education Freedom
Support policies and opportunities that allow families to choose the educational environment—public, private, charter, or home—that best aligns with their values and meets their children’s needs.

  • Build Broad Coalitions
Unite parents, community leaders, and organizations across political and religious lines around the shared belief that children thrive best when families—not government—guide their growth and development.

MKMC Key Issues

Gender Transitions on Minors

No child should be rushed into irreversible medical procedures. “My Kid, My Choice” means parents—not activists or clinics—decide what’s best for their child’s health.

Evidence:

  • Science: 80–90% of children experiencing gender dysphoria naturally desist by adulthood without medical intervention (Dr. Kenneth Zucker, Journal of  Sexual Medicine).
  • Medical Risk: Puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones carry permanent risks including sterility, bone density loss, and cardiovascular issues.
  • Constitutional Reality: The U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly recognized parents’  fundamental right to direct their children’s medical care (e.g., Parham v. J.R., 442 U.S. 584).

Education Curriculum in Public Schools

Parents—not the state—decide what moral and academic foundations their children are taught. “My Kid, My Choice” means transparency in curriculum and the right to opt-out.

Evidence:

  • Law: SCOTUS case Pierce v. Society of Sisters (1925) affirmed parents’ right to control their child’s education.
  • Parental Rights: New Mexico law (like many states) recognizes the right to opt-out of certain curriculum (e.g., sex ed).
  • Data: Parents are the primary influence in children’s moral development (Pew Research, 2019).

Education Freedom

My Kid, My Choice” means parents—not zip codes or unions—decide where and how their child is educated.

Evidence:

  • Research: Students in school choice programs show higher graduation rates, improved test scores, and better parental satisfaction (EdChoice, 2021).
  • Constitutional Reality: Parents’ right to direct education includes choosing private, charter, homeschool, or faith-based schools.

Abortions on Minors Without Parental Consent

A child cannot get an aspirin at school without parental permission—yet radical activists want minors to obtain abortions in secret? “My Kid, My Choice” means parents must be involved in all major medical decisions.

Evidence:

  • Law: 36 states require parental involvement in a minor’s abortion. New Mexico is one of the most extreme states with no parental consent requirement.
  • Medical Risk: Minors face increased physical and psychological complications from abortions, including higher risk of depression and suicide (American College of Pediatricians).
  • Constitutional Reality: Parents have the right and responsibility to safeguard their child’s health (see Parham v. J.R.).

Sexually Explicit & Violently Graphic Reading Materials in Schools

My Kid, My Choice” means protecting children from age-inappropriate sexual and violent content. Parents—not activists—decide when and how their child learns about mature topics.

Evidence:

  • Child Development: The American Academy of Pediatrics warns exposure to sexually explicit or violent content harms children’s mental health, increasing aggression and risky behavior.
  • Legal Reality: Supreme Court (Ginsberg v. New York, 1968) upheld states’ ability to restrict obscene material to minors.
  • Common Sense: Parents regulate screen time, movies, and video games. Why should schools bypass parents when it comes to books?

Parents guide. Government does not override.
